2017 Spring Rifle Range Clean-Up

Saturday May 20 11am - 3pm

(rifle range closed)

Dear DFG Club Members,

I would like to thank Club members that came today to help improve our range. I deeply appreciate your commitment to maintaining and improving our range. Unfortunately less members showed this year, but we were able to finish everything what was planned. Below you can see pictures of what we have done and accomplished.

  1. Trash removal. We cleaned all the trash and accumulated debris which was hauled away. Please make sure all the trash is removed as soon as possible now - I have left trash bags under the corner of large table.
  2. Paint the benches and table. All the benches were carefully painted with protective wood stain, both new and old.

  3. Fully reinstall 25 yard and 50 yard targets. Both targets vertical and horizontal posts were replaced, but in the end we kept them in the same places, otherwise shooting from some benches may have been unsafe. We bolted the old 6x6 on the front for extra protection. Please be careful and do not shoot the frames, and if you see anyone doing so please ask them to stop immediately.

  4. Fully reinstall 200 yard target. New 200 yards target has been installed, both plywood and pipes are new.

  5. Repair 100 yard target. A new 6x6 is attached to the rear of existing post - only the top of the post was damaged. We have replaced horizontal frame as well.

  6. Build 3 portable target stands. Now we have 3 portable targets 4x4 feet with 2x4 feet particle board to attach targets. They can be easily moved around as needed. Please make sure they are returned to the shooting line after use. And please avoid shooting the frames - particle board can be easily replaced, the rest not so much.

  7. Install 2 permanent metal targets (gongs). We have now 2 permanent metal targets hanging on heavy duty chains from metal pipes driven to the ground at about 60deg. One target (12") is at 200 yards, the other (8") at 100 yards. Please be extra careful not shoot the pipes or chains, and PLEASE do not use steel core ammo to shoot at these targets. We got a small 1" free metal target and attached it to 100 yards target flap.

Thank you all for your support. Let's make sure the range stays in the best possible condition!

Jarek

Dear DFG Club Members,

I would like to thank the Club members that came to Saturday meeting to discuss plans for range repair and improvement.

The final plan for our Clean-Up day on Saturday May 20th is as follows:

  1. Trash removal. We need to clean all the accumulated debris from the range (entire range). I will provide trash bags; we will need some rakes (leaf rakes work best for brass).
  2. Paint the benches and tables with stain/wood protector. Repair anti-wasp mesh under the benches. I will provide the paint and brushes.
  3. Fully reinstall 25 yard and 50 yard targets: dig in new vertical support and install new horizontal 4x4.  50 yard target will be moved to the right to avoid being hit by bullets directed at 25 yard target. We will need post diggers. We will bolt leftover 6x6 to the front of vertical posts as added protection.
  4. Fully reinstall 200 yard target. We need new metal pipes and new plywood. I will get the plywood, one of members offered 1" pipes and tools.
  5. Repair 100 yard target. We will replace horizontal 4x4 and flaps and add a new 6x6 on the back bolted to the current one - no need to dig.
  6. Build 3 portable target stands - about 4ft high and 4ft wide, main target area will 2ftx4ft OSB board. I will bring all the materials pre-cut and we will assemble on site. The portable targets should lessen the load (and damage) on permanent target stands.
  7. Install 2 permanent metal targets (gongs) at 200 yards on the left of the plywood target stand. One target will be 8" the other 12". They will be attached to metal pipes driven into the ground at about 60deg angle, they will hang on a strong (grade 70) chain, attached by bolts.  If the targets work well we will install another one at 100 yards at later time. Our members offered pipes and bolts, I will get the targets and chains.
  8. Discuss what would be needed to create a pistol pit with berm on 3 sides in the bushes on the left.

This is a very ambitious agenda! We will need all the help we can get. Please plan to come to help on Saturday May 20th, the work will start at 11am. Please let me know if you can come so we can plan accordingly.

I have started collecting the materials. Steel targets have been ordered and should arrive this week.

I will send another reminder closer to the Clean-Up Day.

Thank you for your support,

Jarek

Dear DFG Club Members,

Based on the responses I received the best time for a meeting to discuss improvement and repair is this Saturday April 22 at 11am. Please come if you can and we will try to finalize our plans and prepare list of materials needed. I will summarize the discussion in an e-mail.

The best time for the cleaning is Saturday May 6 at 11am (changed to Saturday May 20 due to weather). If you didn't respond to my previous e-mail, please let me know if you can come and help and what tools could you bring. It will help a lot if I know how many people are coming so we can plan accordingly.

I have set up a web page for our 2017 Spring Rifle Range Clean-Up.

Thank you very much for your support!

Best regards,

Jarek

Dear DFG Club Members,

It is time to finalize our Rifle Range cleaning and improvement plans. Before I go into the plans, I would like to ask about possible dates. We will have a lot of to do this year (see below) so we will need as much help as we can get. I would like to have a short meeting on the range with anyone interested to discuss details of improvement and cleaning plans – we can meet following weekend (Saturday April 22) at 11am or one weekend later (Saturday April 29) also at 11am. The actual cleaning would be probably best to schedule on Saturday May 6 starting 11am, but if more people can make it on Saturday April 29 we can consider this date too. Please let me know what is your availability and we will make decisions based on how many people can come. I need some time between the discussion and the cleaning to buy supplies and materials.

This year we will need to do the following to bring the range back to shape:

It will take considerably more work this year – we have many new benches that need painting.
  3. Fully reinstall 25 yard and 50 yard targets: dig in new vertical support and install new horizontal 4x4. We can consider moving 50 yard target a bit to the right to avoid being hit by bullets directed at 25 yard target, or alternatively move 25 yard target to the left. We will need post diggers.
  4. Fully reinstall 200 yard target. The target is old and metal pipes are too week now to keep it upright. We need new metal pipes and new plywood. I will get the plywood, if anyone has metal pipes like the ones we used and no need for them anymore please let me know, otherwise I will buy them too. We will need two 6-7 foot pipes – I think then need to go at least 2 feet into the ground. We will also need a tool for driving the pipes into the ground.
  5. Repair 100 yard target. I think vertical post may be repaired, but we can discuss it. Best case we will replace horizontal 4x4 and flaps and add a brace on the back for the vertical support. Worst case we will need to dig in a new vertical support.
  6. Repair portable target tables.

There will be a lot of debris and trash to haul away. Please let me know if you have a truck registered in Tompkins Solid Waste Center, I will need help hauling the trash there, some may not fit into my SUV. I will of course pay all the fees for the trash. For vertical support we use pressure treated 6x6. If you have any you don’t need please let me know.

As for the improvements, there are several ideas that we can discuss.

  1. Permanent metal targets. I have visited Blodgett Mills Club this week, they have a large metal target hanging between the trees at 300 yards. After 2.5 years it is still there, but with some holes in it due to people using steel core ammo. Still not bad. Nobody stole it; it hangs on two fire hoses. We can get metal targets – maybe for 200 yards and smaller for 100 yards, but we will need to hang them on a steel line or rod between two pipes or similar. I welcome any comments and suggestions here. Once we decide support I can order them. Here is a picture:
  2. We can build some movable targets – our target tables are most of the time used as just target stands. They have such targets at Blodgett Mills, and they told me they need repair every 3 months or so, but it is usually easy (and they have over 600 members). Here is a picture
  3. Create a pistol-friendly part of the range. We need to discuss it.

Please let me know if you have other ideas or suggestions.

Most importantly, please let me know your availability both for discussion meeting and for the actual clean-up day.

Best regards,

Jarek
