2026 Spring Rifle Range Clean-Up

Dear DFG Club Members,

I would like to thank all Club members that came to help with our annual cleaning. Many thanks! I deeply appreciate your commitment to maintaining and improving our range. I am really happy to see a very good turnout for the cleaning showing how much you care about our range! The range is a community resource and without your help it simply would not exist, it is our our members who make it happen. There was a lot of work scheduled for today, but thankfully we were able to finish it all by about 12pm - about one hour earlier than usual - even a lot of work doesn't last long with lots of help.

  1. Trash removal. We removed a lot of trash, lots of destroyed portable targets and other debris. The range is now clean and ready for mowing.
  2. The benches were sanded lightly and painted with two coats of the sealer.
  3. The bench with a rotten top planks was repaired.
  4. Anti-wasp mesh under the benches was checked and fixed.
  5. New 6x6 post was placed at 100 yards, thanks to our member who brought an auger we were able to dig deep and no cutting was needed.
  6. Horizontal 4x4 on 50-yard target was replaced.
  7. Plywood on 200-yard target checked and reattached - should last another year.
  8. Rubber flaps on 25 and 50 yard targets replaced, after cleaning flaps at 100 yards turned out to be good.
  9. Steel pipes for hanging steel targets at 100 and 200 yards were replaced, new targets placed. Many thanks to a member who donated steel targets!
  10. Three new portable targets were build and are ready to be used.
  11. We placed a piece of 2x3 in each wooden wire spool with a plastic sheet attached where one can place targets. The spools are heavy, but can be rolled easily, 2x3 can be pulled out for that.

Again: thank you very much for your support. Let's make sure the range stays in the best possible condition!

Dear DFG Club Members,

Our 2026 Rifle Spring Range Clean-up is on Saturday May 30 at 10am.

Here is the list of tasks I would like to propose for this year. Please let me know if you would like to add, change, or modify the list.

  1. Trash removal. We need to clean all the accumulated debris from the range (entire range). I will provide trash bags; we will need some rakes and brooms (leaf rakes work best for brass). It is very important to remove all solid objects scattered on the ground, otherwise mowing will be impossible.
  2. The benches and the table are in good shape, but it would be good to add some fresh stain/wood protector on the top. We may need to remove some paint and clean it up, please bring sandpaper or any portable power tool that can remove some peeling paint. I will provide the paint/stain and brushes.
  3. One bench needs replacement of a top plank; I will bring the plank.
  4. Repair anti-wasp mesh under the benches, I still have some mesh left from last year.
  5. Replace the vertical post on 100-yard target, it completely failed. We can dig the current one out and replace it or dig in the new one behind the current one and use what is there as protection (probably best option). We will need a chainsaw to cut it and pole diggers/shovels to dig, please bring them if you have them.
  6. Replace horizontal 4x4 on 50-yard target.
  7. Reattach large plywood on 200-yard target.
  8. Replace rubber flaps on 25-yard, 50-yard targets, and on 100-yard. I will bring the rubber flaps.
  9. Replace steel pipes for hanging steel targets at 100 yards and left ones at 200 yards. The pipes on the right at 200 yards are fine. Does anyone have steel pipes and a tool to push them into the ground? Please let me know as I don't have any. Otherwise, we can build a portable target to hang steel target at 100 yards, but I am not sure it will last long. Let me know what you think.
  10. Hang new steel targets at 200 and 100 yards. We have one large target in good shape that can go to 200 yards, I will get two smaller ones.
  11. Rebuild all three portable targets, I will bring pre-cut lumber, we will need to build them.
  12. One of our members brought several wooden wire spools, when put on the side a piece of 2x3 can be inserted and used for target placement. Any ideas on how to best use them? I will bring some 2x3.
  13. We need to build a new bigger storage box to supplement one that is under the long table. There are a lot of things in the current one, and it overflows. Please send me ideas, I am not sure what would be the best solution here. Currently there is a simple box made out of plywood with hinged front attached underneath the long table.

There will be a lot of debris and trash to haul away. Please let me know if you have a truck registered in Tompkins Solid Waste Center, I may need help hauling the trash there, some may not fit into Club's trash container. I will of course pay all the fees for the trash.

It would be extremely helpful to have some extra tools and materials. For benches we will need sandpaper or similar tools. We will need leaf rakes, regular rakes, and a broom for cleaning. We will need shovels, pole diggers and a chainsaw for work on the 100-yard target post. It would be helpful to have extra cordless drills with screwdriver bits to work on portable targets and hanging rubber flaps.

Best regards,

Jarek
