2023 Spring Rifle Range Clean-Up
Saturday June 10th 10am

Dear DFG Club Members,

I would like to thank all Club members that came today to help with our annual cleaning. Many thanks! I deeply appreciate your commitment to maintaining and improving our range. The range is a community resource and without your help it simply would not exist. There was a lot of work scheduled for today, but a lot of people came  and therefore despite lots of work to do we managed to finish by 1pm, and what is more important the workload was manageable. You can see pictures from our Clean-Up below.

  1. Range trash was collected an disposed of. We have also collected used up rubber target flaps and shot-up wood an put it on the front side of the berm at 200 yards, which hopefully will slow its erosion.

  2. Thank you very much for brining tools to peel the paint! We run the extension cords from the Club house, the paint was removed and all benches thoroughly repainted.

  3. Anti-wasp mesh was in good condition so we skipped that part this year.

  4. Horizontal 4x4 on 25-, and 50-yard targets were replaced with new ones.

  5. We have replaced all rubber flaps on 25-, 50-, and 100-yard targets. We have conveyer belt rubber again!

  6. All three portable targets have been rebuilt and instead of using plywood we attached conveyer belt rubber so hopefully they will last longer. The traget frames were rebuilt by a memeber who couldn't come today, so he did it in advance and left them on the range.

  7. There is a fourth portable target build by the members on the range, so we skipped adding another one.

  8. 200-yard plywood target has been replaced.

  9. Supporting steel pipes for 100-yard steel target have been replaced, actually one of them, the other is still good. We have one spare pipe now and we will use it when current one fails. Steel targets were rehung and adjusted.

  10. We got more trash bins, there are now at least one per bench! Thank you very much for bringing them.

  11. Finally, we have built the bridge! It is made of 12 railroad ties, put on leveled ground so they don't stick up too high and additionally tied with pressure treated lumber. It was very hard work, railroad ties turned out to be very heavy, but we did it! See the pictures below.

Now that the trash is removed and the bridge in place the range can be mowed again!

Again: thank you very much for your support. Let's make sure the range stays in the best possible condition!

Dear DFG Club Members,

It is a reminder that our 2023 annual Rifle Range Clean-Up will be on Saturday June 10th at 10am. Please consider coming! There is a lot of work to do!

There are two things I would like to mention first.

As you know the clogged culvert on the creek crossing the range has been removed, so now we do not have the lake in the middle of the range anymore. Paul, the Club president, brought railroad ties to the range (12 of them), so we will be able to build the bridge capable of holding the mowing tractor on Saturday. We will need to level some ground close to the creek and then tie them together using pressure treated lumber I will bring. Please bring a few shovels to help with that task.

The second thing is painting the benches. The paint is peeling out and we need to remove it. Please bring some long extension cords to connect to the club house power and some tools like a grinder or a sander that may be useful in removing the paint. This is important since we won't be able to paint them without removing the current peeling paint.

It would be very helpful to have some other extra tools and materials. We will need leaf rakes, regular rakes, and a broom for cleaning. It would be helpful to have extra cordless drills with screwdriver bits to work on the bridge, portable targets and hanging rubber flaps.

Here is the list of tasks for this year. Please let me know if you would like to add, change, or modify the list.

  1. Trash removal. We need to clean all the accumulated debris from the range (entire range). I will provide trash bags; we will need some rakes and brooms (leaf rakes work best for brass). It is very important to remove all solid objects scattered on the groud, otherwise mowing will be impossible.
  2. Paint the benches and tables with stain/wood protector. Unfortunately, the previous paint is peeling out, so we will need to remove it first. We will need a grinder or two, or some other suitable tools. To run the grinder, we will need a long extension cords. If you could bring any of those, please let me know. I will provide the paint and brushes.
  3. Repair anti-wasp mesh under the benches, I still have some mesh left from last year. We will try to use polyurethane foam to fill one bench this year to test if it can be used instead of the mesh.
  4. Replace horizontal 4x4 on 25-, and 50-yard targets.
  5. Replace rubber flaps on 25-, 50-yard targets. We have conveyer belt rubber again so we will be able to replace them as planned.
  6. Rebuild all three portable targets (I will bring pre-cut lumber).
  7. Build a portable target table using the lumber available on the range. We will need a saw, measuring tape, etc. This is optional.
  8. Replace 200-yard plywood target.
  9. Replace supporting steel pipes for 100-yard steel target. Hang all steel targets using rubber strips. At present the targets are hung with steel chains, but those don't last long.
  10. Make sure there is one trash bucket per bench, if possible, to minimize trash spilling over the ground. If you have any bucket you don't need, please bring it, the best are about 5gal pales/buckets, but anything in similar size is good.
  11. Build the bridge! With the bridge in place Paul will be able to mow the range next week.

There will be a lot of debris and trash to haul away. Please let me know if you have a truck registered in Tompkins Solid Waste Center, I may need help hauling the trash there, some may not fit into my SUV or to Club's trash container. I will of course pay all the fees for the trash.

Best regards,

Jarek
